Calendula or Pot Marigold
Tree Surgeon and Gardening Tips from Eastbourne, East Sussex.
There are many reasons to love calendula and to have them growing in the garden with the bright colours bring just one reason. This low maintenance plant ‘Calendula officinalis’ is easy to grow and has many amazing properties to it. They can be grown from seed and do very well being grown in pots and different containers, making them great for any garden type and even on a balcony or window sill. They can grow in many climates and the flowering period is relatively long, through spring to autumn. Better yet they are self seeding so you can plant them one year and they will keep popping up year after year.
They come in a variety of oranges and yellows and add a bright spark to the garden. Regular pruning of these flower heads will keep them coming back all summer long so you use the bright flowers for many uses.
Cut flowers- they can be great to keep in the house in a vase to add some colour to the room.
Natural yellow die- use the petals for a great natural dye to produce soft goldens, honey, light oranges and bright yellows.
Pollinators for bees- they attract many bees and are great at keeping other pests away from your other flowers and plants.
The flowers are edible- they are anti inflammatory, anti bacterial and can help the immune system. Seep the flower petals in water over night to make a great ice tea.
They are great for skin care- infuse the completely dried plants in an oil for a couple weeks and use to oil to make soap bars and calendula cream.
Calendula is great for children as it helps the immune system but please do not use if you are pregnant or breast feeding.
