Frequently Asked Questions- Tree surgery and gardening

Plants- Pollard Tree care

When is the best time to cut my hedge/ tree?

The best time to prune trees should be in late winter. This is before they have time to produce the first buds and therefore any grow back is healthy and energy is put into this new growth.

If you have a formal hedge then this will require more upkeep than an informal hedge- it depends on what look you want. You also want to try to avoid doing any serious hedge removal before spring, as this is when the birds like to make a home in them. We ensure that all animals are not harmed when trimming every hedge.

Can I get a tree or garden related quote over the phone?

Each garden is different and so are the needs of your garden. We can come and provide a personal in person quotation for free to understand what you will need.

Why should I hire a qualified arborist?

Whilst we all like to do some things our selves, climbing, felling and working up a tree requires skill, training and safety. We ensure that we are not only providing the best service but we are also fully qualified to do so. Our climbing experience has seen owner Winston up 80ft cocos. We are also fully insured and well equipped to climb and care for any tree. We have a strong grounds team who is able to ensure safety below and will take away green waste after the job is complete.

What is a conservation area?

Conservation areas are places of special historical or architectural interest. Therefore, there is a limit to the work that can be carried out in these areas. A minimum of six weeks notice is to be submitted to the Local Planning Authority before any work is done in a conservation area. Failure to do so could result in a fine of up to £20,000. A Tree Preservation Order (TPO) can be given to any specific trees or woodland area in order to protect them. This means that they cannot be topped, cut down, uprooted, damaged or looped. If you are unsure whether your land/garden is in a conservation area or a tree is protected, please contact the local planning authority and they will be able to let you know.
