Magnolia (Magnoliaceae)
Garden care and tree surgery tips from Pollard Tree Care, Eastbourne, East Sussex
Magnolias (Magnoliaceae) are the royalty of spring gardens. There are many different types and some will flower later in the summer and many will flower in spring, marking the start of the warmer weather. If you have a smaller, urban garden Magnolia Stellata are perfect for a boarder or can even be grown in a container. Magnolias need plenty of sunlight and shade from windy areas so when looking to plant in your garden, keep an eye out on where is the sunniest spot in your garden for the best care. They also like neutral or acidic soil and if you don’t have the right soil in your garden then they are great to grow in pots. There are some varieties that suit alkaline soil and these are Magnolia grandiflora or Magnolia delavayi.
Garden Tips:
Prune in early summer or at the start of autumn and be careful not to prune too much as this will cause damage to future growth. If you would like to manage the size of your magnolia tree, this is best to be done after a few years it is established. Reducing or removal of a few branches at the time is recommended in order to not cause stress to the tree.
