Using seaweed in your garden
Gardening care and tree surgery tips from Pollard Tree Care, Eastbourne, East Sussex
If you are like us at Pollard Tree Care and are lucky enough to live by the coast then you will have access to fresh and free seaweed. This plant from the sea is a beneficial mineral source that can be used in your garden to replenish certain minerals into your soil. This in turn will give your plants and trees and new boost in growth and vibrancy. As the seaweed breaks down in the soil, microorganisms encourage the production of chlorophyll which is the production process of all plants, including trees, flowers, hedges and so on. Seaweed is particularly rich in iodine, magnesium, iron and calcium and are a source of many more minerals. The seaweed can be dried and dug into your soil in the winter months in order for it to create mineral rich and fertilised soil. You can also soak the seaweed and use the water to water your plants and young trees to help them grow. The plant can also be mulched or just laid on the ground near the roots and as it decays the minerals will seep into the soil surrounding the roots of the tree.
Gardening tips:
It is important to only collect seaweed that has been washed up for your garden (if you are foraging to eat then it is best to cut the fresh plant, leaving about 1/4 of the plant so it can re-grow). There is also no poisonous seaweed in the UK, however many rounds of washing in fresh water will reduce some of the salt in your garden. Only use what you can take and remember not to deplete any sources as seaweed is important for marine life. If you do not live near the coast there are many places you can buy this natural fertiliser. It is a great alternative to those who want to produce the best crops or give your garden the best chance of blooming without the use of harmful chemicals.
