Now that we are spending more time in our own gardens and enjoying the fresh summer air, we are starting to notice the activities of the garden lawn. As the grass gets energy from the sun and that inevitable UK summer rain, it will keep growing and providing us with a lovely green blanket, which will be a base for many of our summer activities. Lawns in general are relatively easy to maintain, that is not to say that they can be just left as they do require some maintained in order to keep them neat, tidy and sustained year after year.

Maintenance tips:

  1. Remove any moss, thatch or weeds. Having moss on your lawn means that there is a number of few things; it has poor drainage, is mostly in the shade, there is drought or a lot of clay in the soil. Thatch is leftover debris from grass and roots and this build up prevents proper drainage. Raking the lawn is the best way to remove this and keep your healthy grass standing.

  2. Acerate. This is done by putting small holes in the soil in order to improve drainage and airflow to the soil. You don’t have to get on your hands and knees to do this as that would take a while. The best way is to buy attachments that fit into your shoes and then its just a quick lap around the garden.

  3. Over-seeding. New seeds mixed with fertilises will rejuvenate your lawn and fill in any missing spots.

  4. Mowing and Edging. As mentioned this will be more regular in the summer months opposed to the winter months but year-round maintenance is important. It is best not to cut more than a third of the grass length and try avoiding cutting when wet. This will damage the grass and can prevent further growth.

  5. Feeding and watering. When we have a drought please let your lawn dry up to save water, even though scratchy grass isn’t everyones favourite. When there is an abundance of water however, watering and feeding is good to keep it healthy and green. Go for a nitrogen lawn feeder and we like to go for the organic kind.

If do not have lawn then that is no problem and at Pollard Tree Care we can lay a beautiful and long lasting turf for you. The best trick to getting a new turf is that you must water it a lot! Twice a day and especially if laid in the summer as this will encourage the roots to grow as they have been severed. Get in contact for a quote now
